Celebrities like Tyra Banks, Janeane Garofalo and Wanda Sykes represent the multitude of women who have professed their profound affection for the Spanx line of modern girdles for the decade since this product hit the market.
Now it’s men’s turn to share the love for these undergarments. According to Catherine Saint Louis of The New York Times (May 28, 2010), Spanx for Men has been a huge hit.
“We are selling them as quickly as Spanx can make them,” said Nickelson Wooster, the men’s fashion director at Neiman Marcus. “Men may not be talking about it, but they’re buying it.”
Just as it took time for men to gain comfort purchasing beauty products like moisturizers without feeling effeminate, there has been a learning curve for “shapewear.” Some men who are too self-conscious to buy shapewear in stores are going online for greater anonymity. “We’ve noticed, as good as in-store sales are – and they are good – the online sales are better,” cites David Witman, the men’s general merchandise manager for Nordstrom. “Men might be embarrassed to ask for it, but they want it.”
For men to overcome their bashfulness about undergarments like Spanx, Mr. Wooster of Neiman Marcus suggests to think of shapewear as “problem-solving, and another way of feeling secure and prepared for life.”
And while women tend to be more candid about lauding their affection for shapewear, referring to Spanx as the “flesh-compressing miracle,” men are more coy about their true motives, claiming that Spanx helps relieve their back pain.
