According to Mediamark Research & Intelligence (MRI), more teens are choosing texting over instant messaging as their preferred channel of communication. Nearly 6 in 10 (57%) teenagers report that they text messaged (SMS) on their mobile phones in the past month, compared to 42% who instant messaged (IM) over the same period of time.
The number of teens who text has increased 50% since 2007, while teens who IM has declined (-13%) during the same time frame. Anne Marie Kelly, SVP, Marketing & Strategic Planning at MRI, reports on the pervasive influence of text messaging in teens’ lives. Nearly 8 in 10 (78%) who text agree that “text messaging is an important part of my daily life”, while fully three-quarters of texting teens claim that they text while watching TV. Moreover, 1 in 5 (20%) of texting teens also use SMS to vote in contests, and 1 in 7 report that they looked at an advertisement sent with a text message.
“This is just another example of the way that we’re all getting more mobile,” claims Ms. Kelly.
