For Gillette’s Newest Fusion Razor: Focus Is On Comfort Not Blade Count

Ellen Byron of The Wall Street Journal (February 12, 2009) reports that instead of adding more blades, Gillette’s Fusion ProGlide will launch this June with ”several technological advancements, including blade edges that are so fine they can only be seen at high magnification, a ‘snow-plow guard’ that prevents hydroplaning and a new ergonomic grip that improves traction.”

“It’s not about blade count,” says Mathew Wohl, P&G’s general manager of male new products and shave care.

P&G contends that the new Fusion’s aim is to make shaving more of a pleasant experience, since their internal research shows that men’s number one need is comfort; a desire for less ‘tug-and-pull’ and less irritation.  P&G hopes that that the ProGlide will not only encourage Fusion users to upgrade to the new system, but also push loyal users of Gillette’s three-blade Mach3 to trade up.

The Fusion is P&G’s top selling line of razors, generating more than $1 billion world-wide in sales each year. Gillette holds more than three-quarters of the U.S. market for razors, with the Fusion accounting for nearly half (45%) of all male shaving systems sold in the U.S.

I would like to read a bit more on that site soon. BTW, pretty nice design you have at this site, but how about changing it every few months?
